NSCDC Chief Audi Initiates Probe into Miners' Deaths

A coalition of civil society organizations, led by Stand Up Nigeria (SUN), has praised Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), for ordering an investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners in Niger State. The NSCDC confirmed the deaths occurred during enforcement operations on September 15 and 16, 2026, in the M.I.

Wushishi/Lukoto area. The coalition welcomed Audi's decision to have the Niger State Commandant step aside during the investigation to prevent interference.

They urged the public to await the investigation's findings, emphasizing that conclusions should be based on verified evidence. The NSCDC has formed a high-powered investigative team led by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation to examine the circumstances of the deaths, including the suspects' conditions at arrest and during custody.

The remains of the deceased are at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination. The NSCDC cautioned against speculation regarding the cause of death, which will be determined through medical examinations.
