NANYD Backs NSCDC Chief Amid Probe of 37 Miners' Deaths

The National Association of Nigerian Youth in Development (NANYD) has expressed support for Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in light of the investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners. NANYD's National President, Alhaji Bukura Ahmed, praised Audi's leadership and described his response to the incident as "swift and decisive." Key actions highlighted include the suspension and public parading of Subaru Siyaka Aniviye, the Niger State Commandant, along with 23 other implicated officers.

The number of personnel in protective custody increased from 21 to 24. NANYD also noted the directive for NSCDC flags to fly at half-mast for three days starting September 20, 2026, as a sign of accountability.

An independent committee, established by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is investigating the incident, chaired by Jonathan Kure. The NSCDC has stated that claims linking the deaths to a specific disease remain unconfirmed pending laboratory results.
