CSOs Critique New Electoral Act Ahead of 2027 Elections

Civil society organizations (CSOs) have expressed strong criticism of the newly signed Electoral Act 2026, describing it as a missed opportunity to strengthen Nigeria's electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a press conference in Abuja, representatives from various groups, including the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, Central Media Society, Kukah Centre, International Press Centre, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Taf Africa, Yiaga Africa, and Disability Rights Advocates, warned that the new law fails to close major loopholes that could be exploited during the upcoming polls.

They raised concerns about the manner in which the bill was passed by the National Assembly, alleging a lack of transparency and the inclusion of last-minute amendments that were not made available to the public. The CSOs criticized President Muhammadu Buhari's decision to grant assent to the law without addressing significant legal and democratic concerns.

While acknowledging some positive provisions, such as the introduction of downloadable voter cards, they highlighted serious issues, particularly regarding electronic transmission of results and the potential for abuse. The spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Hon. Akin Rotimi, defended the law, emphasizing that it is a step in the ongoing electoral reform process.
