Customs Agents Demand Suspension of Shipping Charge Increase

Customs agents in Nigeria, represented by Mr. Lucki Amiwero, the Managing Director of the Customs Agents Association of Nigeria, are calling on President Bola Tinubu to compel the Nigerian Shipper Council (NSC) to suspend its plan to increase local shipping charges.

This request is based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that stipulates that any charge increases must be agreed upon by all concerned parties. The agents argue that the NSC must comply with Article 2(b)(4) of the MOU, which requires that any proposed increases be submitted to the standing committee for review, detailing the reasons for the percentage increase.

They are requesting a suspension of the charge increase until this review is conducted, emphasizing the need for adherence to the prescribed procedures outlined in the MOU. The agents have formally submitted their request to the NSC, referencing previous communications and agreements from 2003 regarding local shipping charges.
