NSC and NRS Seek Import Waivers Amid System Glitches

The Nigerian Shipper Council (NSC) and the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) are pushing for import waivers in response to system glitches that have led to delays and increased costs for import clearance. This call comes after the federal government approved a demurrage waiver for 10,000 containers stranded at the nation's seaports.

Dr. Akutah Piu, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, acknowledged the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) project as a significant milestone for the maritime industry, aimed at streamlining port processes and enhancing transparency.

However, he noted that the rollout has faced operational challenges affecting cargo clearance timelines since its launch on March 27. Dr.

Zach Adedeji, Chairman of the NRS, emphasized the need for shipping companies to understand the waiver process to alleviate financial burdens during delays. Both organizations stress the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to address these challenges and ensure a smoother implementation of the NSW.
