Dangote Refinery Raises Cooking Gas Prices Nationwide

Dangote Refinery has announced an increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from N980 to N1,030 per kilogram, which has raised concerns regarding the affordability of cooking gas for many Nigerian households already facing financial difficulties. This price hike follows significant fluctuations in retail prices across Nigeria in August 2026, where consumers reported paying between N1,200 and N1,500 per kilogram based on their location.

For instance, Sapele recorded the highest price at N1,500 per kilogram, resulting in a refill cost of N18,750 for a 12.5kg cylinder, which is N1,903 above the average of N16,847.22 calculated across 18 locations. Conversely, Gwagwalada and Ijebu East offered the lowest prices at N1,200 per kilogram, leading to a refill cost of N15,000.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated that the average retail price of a 5kg LPG cylinder rose to N8,706.93, marking a 13.73% month-on-month increase, further burdening households.
