Senator Urges Nigerian Government to Declare Cancer Emergency, Imo State First Lady Highlights Interventions

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, chairman of the Senate Committee on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases, called on the Nigerian government to declare a national emergency to address the growing menace of breast cancer in Nigeria. This plea was made during a World Cancer Day symposium organized by Project Pink Blue in Abuja.

Ohuabunwa emphasized the need for proper care for breast cancer patients and acknowledged the government's efforts in tackling cancer challenges but stressed the necessity for increased support. Chioma Uzodinma, the wife of the Imo State Governor and chairperson of the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), outlined various interventions by the Imo State Government to reduce the burden of cancer treatment, including free cancer screenings and support programs.

Uzodinma also highlighted efforts to expand collaborations with government and private sector organizations, international partners, and advocacy initiatives to enhance cancer treatment and research. The symposium aimed to address the challenges posed by conflicts and insecurity in worsening the existing gaps in cancer care across the country.
