SERAP Urges Presidential Candidates to Declare Assets

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the 19 presidential candidates announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission to publicly declare their assets and liabilities ahead of the 2027 presidential election. In an open letter dated August 8, 2026, signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP urged candidates to disclose not only their own financial information but also that of their spouses and unmarried children under 18.

The organization emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity as candidates seek Nigeria's highest elected office. Among the candidates listed were President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, and Peter Obi of the National Democratic Congress, among others.

SERAP argued that candidates should be prepared for public scrutiny of their financial affairs before asking for votes, enabling voters to make informed decisions based on integrity and competence rather than financial strength.
