Delta NLC Protests After Deputy Director's Death in Asaba

On September 25, 2026, workers under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protested by shutting down the Delta State Secretariat in Asaba in response to the death of Deputy Director Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda. Adeda, a staff member of the Ministry of Secondary Education, died in the hospital on September 24, 2026, following an alleged confrontation at the Prof Chike Odozien Secretariat.

Reports indicate that during the incident, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Kingsley Ashibogwu confronted Adeda, asking if he knew him, to which Adeda reportedly replied negatively. The NLC demanded an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Adeda's death, which they allege resulted from an assault.

Delta State NLC Chairman Goodluck Ofobruku expressed concerns for worker safety and stated that workers would return to their duties only if the government assured them of their safety. Benson Efeotor, Chairman of the Joint Civil Service Negotiating Council, also sought information regarding the incident and urged calm among workers.
