Tinubu Warns Terrorists on Democracy Day Broadcast

On Democracy Day, June 12, 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a nationwide broadcast marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria. He issued a strong warning to terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers, stating that the window for surrender would not remain open indefinitely.

Tinubu emphasized the government's commitment to restoring peace and security, declaring that no mercy would be shown to those who threaten Nigeria's stability. He expressed concern over the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states and announced the approval to recruit 50,000 police officers alongside thousands of military recruits to reinforce security operations nationwide.

The 2026 budget allocates ₦5.41 trillion for defense and security, the largest in Nigeria's history. Tinubu noted a significant decline in terror-related deaths and highlighted the success of the government's deradicalization program, which has seen 124,000 fighters surrender.

He urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to nation-building despite ongoing challenges.
