Melat Kiros Defeats Diana DeGette in Colorado Primary

Melat Kiros, a Democratic Socialist, achieved a significant victory in the Colorado primary by unseating 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette in the strongly Democratic 1st Congressional District of Denver. Kiros, born in Ethiopia in 1997, previously completed her legal studies at the University of Notre Dame in 2022.

She gained attention for a blog post challenging claims about law student protests against Israel's military actions following the October 7 attack, which led to her losing her job at a New York law firm. Kiros's campaign received backing from Bernie Sanders and progressive organizations like the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats.

Her platform centered on U.S. policy towards Israel, where she accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and opposed sending offensive weapons to Israel. DeGette, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has served in Congress for 29 years and previously supported major left-leaning policies.

Kiros's victory reflects a growing trend of younger candidates challenging established Democratic leadership.
