Economic Hardship Fuels Mental Health Crisis in Nigeria

Prof. Taiwo Obindo, a former president and psychiatrist in Nigeria, has warned that the rising economic hardship and insecurity in the country are contributing to an increase in mental illnesses, particularly anxiety and depression.

He stated that even though mental illnesses are treatable and require psychological intervention, many Nigerians face financial barriers to accessing healthcare. Obindo highlighted that approximately seven million Nigerians live with depression, which is a major risk factor for suicide.

He called for structural improvements in primary healthcare centers to help detect and treat depression early, especially given the alarming rise in suicide attempts. The socio-economic environment in Nigeria, characterized by poverty and unemployment, exacerbates the mental health crisis.

Factors such as drug abuse and underlying mental disorders also play significant roles in triggering suicidal thoughts. Obindo urged for serious attention from government and health practitioners to address these challenges effectively.
