Oyo School Abduction: Terrorists Hinder Rescue Efforts

On May 15, 2023, terrorists from the group Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad abducted 42 pupils and teachers, including principal Michael Oyedokun, from a Baptist nursery and primary school in Oyo State. The terrorists have set traps within Oyo National Park and are using improvised explosive devices to frustrate rescue operations.

Security sources report that the group is constantly moving the captives to avoid detection, complicating military efforts. The Nigerian Army has faced significant challenges, including the loss of personnel during clashes with the terrorists.

Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the military's losses during the ongoing rescue efforts. The terrorists are demanding the release of two commanders in exchange for the abducted victims.

The situation is further complicated by the terrorists' tactics of using captives as human shields, making any rescue attempt perilous. Security operations are ongoing, but the terrain and tactics employed by the terrorists are severely hindering progress.
