DIAN Calls for Investment in Nigeria's Defense Industry

During a high-level meeting held in Abuja on May 13, 2023, Ibrahim Alaya, the Chairman of the Defence Industries Association of Nigeria (DIAN), emphasized the urgent need for sustained investment in Nigeria's local defense industry. He stated that strengthening this sector is crucial for enhancing national security and reducing reliance on imported military hardware.

The meeting included members of DIAN and stakeholders from the defense manufacturing sector, who reviewed ongoing reform strategies aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act 2023. Alaya noted that improving local manufacturing capabilities is essential for ensuring that the armed forces have timely access to critical military equipment and enhancing the resilience of the supply chain.

He urged DIAN members to intensify efforts towards achieving self-sufficiency in military hardware and related technologies. The meeting also discussed plans to expand DIAN membership to include indigenous firms across the defense security value chain and preparations for the upcoming African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) scheduled for Lagos from October 26 to 29, 2026.
