Nigeria's Digital Switch Over Set for June 2026 Launch

The Digital Switch Over (DSO) project in Nigeria is scheduled for a nationwide launch on June 17, 2026, as announced by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris. This initiative will offer 100 free television channels to Nigerian subscribers and is supported by a ₦10 billion grant approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The DSO aims to transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, which is expected to unlock significant economic benefits, including job creation and increased advertising revenue. However, the project has faced numerous challenges, including delays, regulatory bottlenecks, and funding gaps, which have previously hindered its progress.

The DSO's pilot launch occurred in Plateau State on April 30, 2016, but subsequent phases have struggled to meet deadlines, with Nigeria missing several previous targets for the switch. The National Broadcasting Commission anticipates that successful implementation of the DSO will enhance nationwide coverage and contribute to the diversification of Nigeria's economy.
