Kano State Expands Diphtheria Treatment to Rural Areas
The Kano State Government has decentralized diphtheria treatment by establishing more treatment centres across rural areas, as announced by Prof. Muhammad Adamu Abbas, the Director-General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC). This initiative aims to reduce the need for patients from remote areas to travel to the state capital for treatment, which poses risks of spreading the disease during transportation.
A total of 26 treatment centres have been set up, including those in Primary and Secondary Healthcare facilities. Since the outbreak began in December 2022, more than 32,000 diphtheria cases have been confirmed, with over 39,000 suspected cases investigated.
Among the confirmed cases, more than 16,000 involved children who had never received vaccinations, while over 9,000 had been fully vaccinated. The remaining cases were either partially vaccinated or had no vaccination records.
