Kano Government Launches Diphtheria Case Search Initiative

The Kano State government has launched an active case search in communities following unverified claims of 50 child deaths due to diphtheria. The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) conducted an investigation with the Rano LGA Rapid Response Team (RRT), confirming four deaths—two attributed to diphtheria and two to suspected malaria and typhoid fever.

KNCDC Director-General, Professor Muhammad Adamu Abbas, stated that the government acted swiftly to address the rumors. The investigation identified several active and recovered cases in areas including Rurum Tsohon Gari, Sabuwar Kaura, Sabon Gari A, and Sakkwatawa.

Notably, one household in Sabon Gari A had both an active case and a death, prompting urgent contact tracing. The KNCDC found that none of the affected children had documented immunization histories, indicating significant immunity gaps.

The government has intensified community sensitization, distributed medicines, and strengthened the Diphtheria Treatment Centre at Rano Emirate Hospital, while urging parents to ensure their children are vaccinated.
