Distillers Protest Nigeria's Ban on Sachet Alcohol Sales

Distillers in Nigeria organized a protest against the federal government's announcement of a nationwide crackdown on sachet alcohol beverages, which includes products packaged in PET bottles below 200ml. The protest took place on March 4, 2026, at the NAFDAC office in Oshodi, Lagos, starting at 8:30 AM.

The ban, which is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, is part of a public enlightenment campaign aimed at reducing underage drinking, as highlighted by NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyey. The enforcement follows extensive surveys indicating that 54.3% of minors can access alcohol from various sources.

The distillers argue that the ban could render five million Nigerians jobless. The crackdown has been a topic of concern since 2018, with previous discussions about regulating alcohol concentration in sachets.

The enforcement of this ban is part of a broader strategy to address the health risks associated with underage drinking.
