Protests Erupt Over NAFDAC's Alcohol Ban in Abuja

Protests in Abuja on Wednesday were sparked by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control's (NAFDAC) ban on sachet alcohol products, particularly those in 200ml PET bottles. The coalition of concerned citizens, led by Amb.

Kingsley Nwanz, criticized the agency's director, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, for what they termed "gross incompetence" and "abuse of office." Nwanz argued that the ban is illegal, arbitrary, and economically damaging, alleging it contravenes existing national alcohol policy provisions. The protesters called for the immediate removal of Adeyeye, claiming the ban could trigger civil unrest and undermine ongoing economic reforms, potentially leading to job losses and the rise of illicit products.

They emphasized that sachet alcohol serves as a controlled consumption option for low-income consumers. Despite the protests, NAFDAC's director insisted on remaining in office, stating that the agency would continue its operations.

The group formally petitioned the Senate, expressing confidence that lawmakers would review the matter based on empirical evidence.
