Djokovic's Health Issues Lead to US Open First-Round Exit

Novak Djokovic experienced severe health issues during his first-round match at the US Open, which resulted in a shocking defeat to Argentina’s Mariano Navone. The match, held at Flushing Meadows, lasted four and a half hours, with Djokovic losing 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Djokovic, 39, struggled with vomiting, cramps, back pain, and a shoulder problem, which worsened as the match progressed. He vomited multiple times and faced severe cramps that limited his movement.

Despite these challenges, Djokovic chose not to retire, stating, “I didn’t want to give up.” This defeat ended his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title and halted his impressive streak of 78 consecutive first-round wins at Grand Slam tournaments. Djokovic has been dealing with an underlying health condition, particularly in hot and humid conditions, which also affected his performance at the Cincinnati Open prior to the US Open.

He expressed his respect for Navone’s victory, acknowledging the emotional toll of the match.
