Domestic Investors Boost NGX Trading to N13.25trn

Activity on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) saw a significant increase in the first eight months of 2026, with total transactions rising 91.5% to N13.25 trillion from N6.92 trillion in the same period of 2025. This surge was largely fueled by domestic investors, whose transactions reached N11.89 trillion, representing 89.77% of total market activity, while foreign investors accounted for N1.35 trillion, or 10.23%.
Domestic transactions more than doubled from N5.46 trillion in the corresponding period of the previous year. In August, however, trading activity slowed sharply, with total transactions falling 46.38% to N1.27 trillion from N2.37 trillion in July, although this was still 39.75% higher than August 2025.
Domestic transactions in August dropped 45.98% month-on-month to N1.21 trillion, while foreign transactions decreased by 53.23% to N62.03 billion. Institutional investors led domestic activity, contributing N7.36 trillion, compared to N4.53 trillion from retail investors.
