Prof. Fasanmad Advocates for Mandatory Health Insurance in Nigeria

During the 15th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists of Nigeria held at the Dame Edith Okowa Auditorium, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, Prof. Olufemi Fasanmad called on the Federal Government to make health insurance compulsory.

He highlighted the rising cases of hypertension, diabetes, and kidney failure, which are exacerbating the healthcare burden and pushing households into financial distress. Fasanmad emphasized that without a mandatory health insurance system, many Nigerians would remain uninsured, leaving millions vulnerable to catastrophic health expenses.

He noted that Nigeria's health insurance coverage is estimated to be less than 10%, with patients suffering from chronic diseases facing unbearable financial pressure. Prof.

William Balogun raised concerns about the rising inflation in the health sector, which is making treatment increasingly unaffordable. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi discussed the need for improved primary healthcare services and screening programs to address the silent crisis of undiagnosed conditions affecting millions of Nigerians.
