UNICEF and US Government Aid 40,000 Bauchi Children’s Nutrition

In Bauchi State, a collaborative effort between the state government, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the US Government has significantly contributed to combating malnutrition. Philomena Irene, Nutrition Specialist at UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, reported that over 40,000 children aged six to 23 months benefited from nutrition support funded by a US government grant.

The initiative provided small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements to prevent malnutrition during the critical first 1,000 days of life. Additionally, more than 6,000 parents were trained on nutrition and health practices.

The program also enhanced the capacity of frontline health workers and improved logistics and information management systems. Local governments were encouraged to allocate funds for nutrition interventions, and advocacy meetings were held with state legislators to promote budget lines for nutrition-specific activities.

Irene emphasized the importance of adequate nutrition during the first 1,000 days for long-term health and development.
