NUT Opposes UTME Waiver for NCE Holders in Nigeria

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), represented by National President Audu Amba, expressed strong opposition to the federal government's proposal to remove the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) requirement for candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education. This stance was articulated during a teacher workshop organized by the Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in Abuja.

Amba emphasized that such a move could weaken the standards of teacher training in the country, as it may lead to Colleges of Education being perceived as a lower option compared to universities. He highlighted that high-performing students often prefer universities, leaving Colleges of Education with candidates who may not secure university admission.

Amba argued that attracting the strongest students to Colleges of Education is crucial for maintaining the quality of future teachers in Nigeria. Additionally, TRCN registrar Dr. Ronk Soyombo noted the necessity for teachers to possess stronger digital and professional skills to meet the demands of modern learning and the changing global economy.
