DR Congo Qualifies for First World Cup Since 1974

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has qualified for its first FIFA World Cup in 52 years, marking a significant achievement since their last appearance in 1974 when they competed as Zaire. The qualification was secured after a match where Axel Tuanzebe scored the crucial goal during the first half of extra time, leading DR Congo to victory.

This makes them the 10th African nation to qualify for the expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. DR Congo's star striker, Cedric Bakambu, had two goals ruled offside during the match.

The breakthrough came in the 100th minute from a corner kick, with a deflected cross allowing Tuanzebe to score. Tuanzebe, born in Burnley and having represented England at youth levels, switched allegiance to his native country.

DR Congo will be placed in Group K and will face Portugal in their opening match on June 17 in Houston.
