DR Congo Qualifies for 2026 FIFA World Cup After 52 Years
• Naijanews • Sports
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has secured its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking its first appearance in 52 years. This achievement came after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff held in Guadalajara, Mexico. The decisive moment arrived in the 100th minute when Axel Tuanzebe scored the winning goal, following a corner kick taken by Brian Cipenga. Although Cedric Bakambu had two goals disallowed for offside during regular time, Tuanzebe's goal was confirmed after a brief VAR check for handball. DR Congo will begin its World Cup campaign in Group K against Portugal on June 17, 2026, and will also face teams including Colombia and Uzbekistan. The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history, expanding from 32 to 48 teams, and will take place across North America from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
