DRC Reports Over 7,000 Ebola Cases Amid Outbreak

The Congolese authorities reported a total of 7,022 Ebola cases, with 1,671 recoveries. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya stated that the spread of the virus may have peaked, noting that this peak occurred in the third week of August.

Indicators suggest a decline in new infections, with 10 out of 61 health zones affected by the outbreak reporting no new cases for at least 21 days. The outbreak began in Ituri Province and has spread to remote areas with limited health infrastructure.

Recently, Ebola was confirmed in South-Ubangi Province, which borders the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. Concerns have arisen regarding the detection of Ebola among schoolchildren in Ituri following their return to school.

In response, health authorities and school officials have implemented preventive measures, including mandatory hand washing and limiting classroom sizes to 30 pupils. Ebola is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids and can lead to severe illness and death.

The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
