Over 300 Children Die from Ebola in DRC Outbreak

The Democratic Republic of Congo is experiencing a severe Ebola outbreak, with over 300 children reported dead since its onset, according to the United Nations. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, referencing UNICEF data, indicated that children represent nearly a quarter of confirmed cases and almost one-third of total deaths.

The outbreak is primarily concentrated in eastern DRC, where more than 4,000 cases and 1,850 deaths have been documented. Health authorities warn of the outbreak's rapid spread, which has led to a significant decline in healthcare access, with health service usage dropping by over 40% in the most affected areas due to fear of infection.

Additionally, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reported that maternal deaths in Ituri Province have nearly doubled since the outbreak began, with approximately six women dying weekly from childbirth-related complications. The UNFPA also highlighted the high risk of fetal loss associated with Ebola infection during pregnancy.
