ACReSAL Launches PES Pilot Framework in Adamawa State

The ACReSAL project is progressing with the development of a technical framework for a Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) pilot scheme, initiated in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The project aims to provide financial incentives to landowners and users to adopt sustainable land management practices, thereby enhancing vital ecological services and carbon sequestration.

An inception meeting held in Abuja focused on reviewing the proposed methodologies and frameworks necessary for the pilot's implementation. Abdulhamid Umar, the National Project Coordinator, emphasized the importance of a rigorous design phase to ensure the pilot's success.

The project has already restored 800,000 hectares of land through afforestation and agroforestry, with plans to distribute 1 million seedlings to 300 households across 3,131 hectares of regenerative agriculture. The Food and Agriculture Organization's Giacomo Branca participated in the technical discussions, assessing the feasibility of public PES models and the necessary infrastructure for monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas baselines.
