Ebola Cases Surge to 900 in Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently facing a significant Ebola outbreak, with 900 suspected cases identified, including 101 confirmed cases, as reported by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus. The outbreak was declared on May 15 and is associated with the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

As of the latest updates, the DRC health ministry has recorded 204 deaths across three provinces. The Ebola virus, which spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.

Health experts have emphasized that the disease does not spread through the air. The recent resurgence of Ebola has raised alarms in Nigeria, recalling the country's successful containment efforts during the 2014 outbreak, which was triggered by a Liberian-American diplomat.

Public health experts warn that increased global travel and porous borders pose significant risks for countries across Africa, including Nigeria, despite improvements in disease surveillance systems established during the COVID-19 pandemic.
