Echono Advocates E-Voting for University Leadership

Arc Sonni Echono, appointed as a visiting scholar at the University of Abuja, delivered a public lecture advocating for the adoption of electronic voting in the leadership selection process of Nigeria's federal universities. He described this initiative as a critical step toward enhancing transparency and accountability, which would improve public confidence in the process.

Echono's lecture, titled "Leadership Selection Process: Governance of Federal Universities in Nigeria (1993-2024)," highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to create a centralized application system and an online platform for real-time tracking of applications. He noted that political interference continues to undermine academic excellence and that establishing clear guidelines for leadership appointments is essential.

Echono urged policymakers to ensure stakeholder participation in the appointment process and recommended the formation of inclusive search committees that reflect diverse stakeholders within institutions. His findings suggest that transparent and inclusive leadership selection processes lead to better governance outcomes and stronger institutional stability.
