E-voting Debate Intensifies After Controversial Primaries

The debate surrounding e-voting in Nigeria has gained momentum following controversial party primaries conducted by major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Observers reported chaotic scenes during the primaries, with allegations of arbitrary result allocation and officials skipping vote counts.

This has led to public outrage and criticism from political analysts, including Bode Jame, who described the conduct of the primaries as damaging to public confidence in democracy. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to introduce electronic voting for future primaries to enhance transparency and eliminate manual manipulation.

However, neither the APC nor PDP has officially announced plans to adopt e-voting. Analysts, including Prof. Gbade Ojo, noted that while political parties are legally empowered to choose their voting methods, the current socio-economic realities, such as poor electricity supply and low ICT infrastructure, pose challenges to implementing e-voting effectively.
