ECOMOG Veterans Call for Remembrance Day for Troops

ECOMOG veterans have requested the Federal Government of Nigeria to create a dedicated remembrance day to honor the hundreds of Nigerian troops who lost their lives during peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone. This appeal was made by Major General Ohifeme Ejimai (retd.) during a meeting at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja with General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), the Minister of Defence, and Leah Katung-Babatunde, Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister.
Ejimai emphasized the importance of addressing gaps in the documentation of ECOMOG operations and personnel to preserve the history and sacrifices of Nigerian troops. Musa reaffirmed the government's commitment to honoring the legacy of ECOMOG and acknowledged the significant resources Nigeria contributed to the peacekeeping force.
He assured that efforts to document records and casualties would be completed to ensure the history of ECOMOG is preserved for future generations. ECOMOG was established by ECOWAS in 1990 to support regional peacekeeping efforts.
