Anglican Bishop Warns of Economic Hardship and Insecurity

Rt. Rev. Stephen Fagbemi, the Bishop of Owo Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria during his Charge at the Second Session of the 15th Synod held at St. Paul’s Church, Imoru, Ondo State.

He emphasized that the rising cost of living and insecurity have left many Nigerians struggling to meet basic needs. Fagbemi urged both the Federal and state governments to take immediate action to enhance citizens' welfare and address security challenges.

He noted that many families cannot afford healthcare, leading them to rely on traditional remedies. The bishop described the insecurity situation as alarming, citing recent kidnappings as evidence of the threat to lives and livelihoods.

He called for a state of emergency on insecurity and recommended improved intelligence gathering and collaboration with local security outfits. Looking towards the 2027 elections, he cautioned against political decisions made out of frustration and criticized the conduct of recent political party primaries for undermining democracy.
