ECOWAS and Mauritania Strengthen Security Cooperation

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Mauritania have deepened their security cooperation to tackle the evolving security situation in the Sahel and West Africa, which includes threats from terrorism, violent extremism, organized crime, and climate-related pressures. President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening regional solidarity and advancing practical solutions for peace, stability, and sustainable development.

He noted that Mauritania serves as a crucial bridge between the Maghreb, Sahel, and West Africa, highlighting its experience in combating terrorism and enhancing border security as valuable assets for regional peace efforts. President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel and pledged continued cooperation with ECOWAS.

The leaders proposed a special regional summit to address emerging security threats across West Africa and reaffirmed their commitment to work jointly to promote peace, security, and sustainable development in the region.
