Edo Community Leader Reuben Owie Shot Dead at Home

An 85-year-old secretary of Iyowa Community was killed by two gunmen at his residence in Benin City on August 2.

On the evening of August 2, 2026, Reuben Owie—an 85-year-old leader of the Iyowa Community—was fatally shot by two unidentified gunmen at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhunhun Road, Benin City. The shooting took place around 8:15 p.m. on a Sunday, as confirmed by the Edo State Police Command.

Owie held the position of Secretary in the Iyowa Community, located within Ovia North-East Local Government Area. Following the attack at their home on No. 2 Abu Street in Iguosa, his son Osayomwanbo Owie notified authorities of what had transpired.

On Saturday, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Edo State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, verified the incident when speaking with journalists. An investigation has been initiated by detectives working for the Edo State Police Command to examine what led to the attack.

As of the police statement, the two perpetrators had not been identified, and no one had yet been apprehended in relation to the killing. This shooting represents yet another instance of violent crime directed at residents across Edo State.

Regarding the motive behind the assault or specifics concerning how the gunmen breached Owie's home, law enforcement officials have offered no further information.
