Edo Government Shuts Down Unregistered Jess Royal Hospital

The Edo State government has closed Jess Royal Hospital, which had been operating for over 10 years without statutory registration with the Edo State Ministry of Health or EDOHERMA. Dr Adesuwa Urhoghide-Edigin, CEO of EDOHERMA, stated that the hospital was discovered during a monitoring exercise at an orphanage in the same building.

The hospital's owner claimed membership in the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP), but this does not equate to legal registration. The inspection revealed numerous deficiencies, including poor infection control practices, cobwebs, rusted equipment, damaged mattresses, and a lack of emergency preparedness.

EDOHERMA ordered the hospital to halt all operations immediately and provided a two-week period to begin the registration process and rectify the identified issues. The agency emphasized that Jess Royal Hospital would not be allowed to resume operations until it meets all regulatory requirements, prioritizing patient safety and adherence to health standards.
