Edo State Urged to Create Power Regulatory Commission

Governor Mondai Okpebholo has been urged to establish the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission to foster growth in the state's power sector. Odion Omonfoman, leading the call, highlighted the necessity of breaking the monopoly held by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to attract investment.

This appeal follows the groundbreaking of a 100MW independent power plant in Ologbo on March 9. Omonfoman noted that the establishment of a regulatory framework is crucial for operationalizing the existing Edo State Electricity Law of 2023, which aims to create a competitive market similar to the telecommunications sector.

The regulatory commission would ensure fair pricing, transparency, and compliance with legal standards, addressing long-standing consumer grievances regarding service quality and billing practices. He warned against political interference in the commission's appointments, advocating for professionals with expertise in energy economics and power markets to lead the commission.
