Edun Advocates for Fiscal Reforms to Combat Illicit Flows

Wale Edun, the Nigerian Minister of Finance, urged for urgent fiscal reforms to address illicit financial flows in Africa during the fifth session of the African Union's Sub-Committee on Tax and Illicit Financial Flows in Abuja. He noted that Africa loses approximately $88 billion annually due to these flows, which adversely affect critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Edun identified key challenges facing Africa, including tax evasion and weak institutional capacity, which hinder economic diversification and reliance on external financing. He emphasized that the African Union's Agenda 2063 provides a clear framework for reform, advocating for improved tax systems, enhanced public financial management, and the development of domestic savings.

Edun also highlighted the need for leadership from President Bola Tinubu to implement tax policies that simplify the system and expand the tax base. He called for robust capital market development and stronger cross-border collaboration to combat illicit financial flows effectively.
