EFCC Reveals Public Officials Amassed Wealth Post-Office

At a ceremony in Abuja marking the 80th birthday of former Attorney-General Kanu Agabi, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olukoyede, disclosed that the commission receives over 20,000 petitions regarding public corruption annually. He highlighted the alarming trend of public officials whose financial status dramatically improved after taking office, with some accumulating millions of dollars and naira within three to four years.

Olukoyede noted that individuals who previously had less than N100,000 in their accounts were found to possess substantial wealth upon leaving office, including ownership of numerous properties. He stressed that public office holders must be accountable for their actions and that transparency should be central to public resource management.

Musa Adamu Aliyu, chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), pointed out societal acceptance of corruption and institutional weaknesses as key factors perpetuating corruption in Nigeria, advocating for integrity education to combat these issues.
