EFCC and NJI Push for Legal Reforms to Speed Up Corruption Trials

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) have advocated for legal and procedural reforms to eliminate delays and abuses in the trial of corruption and economic crimes. This call was made in a Communique following the 8th Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges, held in Abuja from 13-15 October 2026.
The workshop, organized by the EFCC in collaboration with the NJI, focused on the theme “Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Financial Crimes in a Digital Age.” Participants, including Justices, Judges, and EFCC investigators, resolved that designating specialized judges and court staff would significantly reduce delays in corruption case resolutions. They emphasized the need for a balanced criminal justice system and recommended reviewing relevant provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
The Communique also highlighted the importance of enhancing investigation standards and adopting a coordinated approach in obtaining confessional statements to protect suspects' rights.
