EFCC Takes Faisal Maina into Custody for Money Laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the custody of Faisal Maina, the son of Abdulrasheed Maina, following his arrest after six years evading law enforcement. Faisal was apprehended by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Karsana, Abuja, on October 17, 2026, after intelligence indicated his secret return to Nigeria.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated that the commission would seek a court order to transfer Faisal to a correctional center to serve his sentence. Faisal had been on the run since 2020 for violating bail conditions related to a money laundering case.
He was convicted in October 2021 by Justice Okon Abang and sentenced to 14 years in prison for laundering N58.1 million through a fictitious account with United Bank for Africa. The Court of Appeal later reduced his sentence to seven years in November 2022.
His arrest is expected to facilitate the enforcement of this reduced sentence.
