Media Experts Push for Issue-Based Coverage in Ekiti 2026

On June 20, 2026, the governorship election in Ekiti State is approaching, prompting media professionals to shift their focus towards issue-driven reporting. During a two-day stakeholder dialogue organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) with support from the European Union, experts emphasized the importance of quality electoral coverage in shaping a credible democratic process.

IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade highlighted the necessity for journalists to move beyond personality-driven narratives and embrace data-backed, fact-checked reporting. Taiwo Ob from the Journal Clinic urged journalists to integrate digital tools, including artificial intelligence, into their workflows to remain relevant and enhance investigative work.

Prof. Adebola Aderibigbe from the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti called for a break from sensational, person-centric reporting, warning that imbalanced coverage could undermine the electoral process.

The consensus emerged that while technology can aid journalists, it cannot replace their role in delivering accurate and balanced stories.
