Ekiti Assembly's Speaker Confirms Delay in Constitutional Bill

The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, announced that the Assembly has not yet received the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which was transmitted by the National Assembly on September 16, 2026.

Aribasoye stated that the Assembly would conduct thorough legislative scrutiny of the proposed constitutional amendments upon receipt of the documents. He emphasized the importance of examining the details and implications of the proposals for the people of Ekiti State.

The proposed amendments include the establishment of state police, which has already passed in both chambers of the National Assembly. The Speaker reiterated the Assembly's commitment to following the constitutional procedure outlined in Section 9 of the Constitution for alterations.

The ongoing constitutional alteration process requires approval from at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly for any changes to proceed.
