Ekiti Assembly Receives Bill for State Police Services

The Ekiti State House of Assembly confirmed the receipt of a bill from the National Assembly that seeks to amend the Constitution of Nigeria to establish State Police Services. Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye announced this following a letter from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogmulana, dated 16 September 2026.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to Provide for the Establishment of State Police Services and for Related Matters,” was passed by the Senate on 24 June 2026 and by the House of Representatives on 23 July 2026. The proposed amendment aims to create a constitutional framework for State Police Services while maintaining the Nigeria Police Force as the Federal Police Service.

Aribasoye stated that the Assembly would begin the necessary legislative processes, with the bill undergoing administrative work before being scheduled for consideration by the House Rules and Business Committee. He directed that this administrative work be completed within one or two weeks to avoid delays.
