Aisha Yesufu Critiques EFCC Over Vote Buying in Ekiti

Aisha Yesufu, a rights activist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly turning a blind eye to vote-buying during the Ekiti State governorship election. Yesufu argued that the practice of vote buying should be decriminalized in Nigeria, stating that law-abiding citizens often face consequences while those engaging in electoral malpractice go unpunished.

She expressed her views on social media, suggesting that the current laws do not make sense as they punish voters rather than those who buy votes. Yesufu also pointed out that instead of candidates wasting money on campaigns, the electoral process has turned into a bidding war where the highest bidder wins.

Concurrently, allegations of electoral malpractice have emerged against Dare Bejid, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who was accused of distributing cash at polling units. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not responded to these allegations.
