Tribunal Criticizes SDP for Delays in Election Petition

On Tuesday, the Ekiti State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, led by Chairman Justice Idris Kutigi, reprimanded the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its counsel, Ebenezer Akingbule, for unnecessary delays in presenting witnesses in their petition against Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Justice Kutigi expressed disappointment over the counsel's failure to present witnesses despite claiming they were ready, criticizing the use of delay tactics that hindered the tribunal's progress.

The SDP is contesting the June 20 election results, alleging non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2026. The situation escalated after the tribunal's adjournment, with SDP members clashing over internal disputes regarding witness legitimacy.

Notably, Adedayo Alade, the SDP's candidate and second petitioner, had previously withdrawn his petition, leaving the SDP to pursue the case alone. Justice Kutigi stressed the importance of efficiency in the trial, warning against further procrastination that could impede the electoral process.
