Ekiti State Government Enhances Ebola and Diphtheria Surveillance

The Ekiti State Government is intensifying its disease surveillance and rapid response mechanisms across its 16 Local Government Areas to prevent outbreaks of Ebola Virus Disease and Diphtheria. Dr Oyebanji Filani, the state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, stated that the surveillance systems have been strengthened for early detection and effective containment of suspected cases.

This announcement was made during a sensitization program in Ado Ekiti, attended by various stakeholders, including community leaders and health workers. Dr Bosede Alowooye, the state Epidemiologist, highlighted that the World Health Organisation has declared Ebola a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, necessitating heightened alertness.

The sensitization program aims to educate stakeholders on preventive measures and reporting procedures. The state has activated its public health emergency operation centre and trained airport staff and healthcare teams on detection and management of potential cases.

Alowooye listed symptoms of Ebola and emphasized the importance of hygiene and prompt reporting to health authorities.
