Lagos Government Issues Heat Warning Amid El Niño Effects

The Lagos State Government has warned residents, particularly children, pregnant women, elderly persons, and outdoor workers, to take precautions against possible extreme heat conditions linked to the strengthening El Niño climate pattern and the transition into the dry season. The warning was issued by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina.
Wahab highlighted that Lagos, being a densely populated coastal city, faces heightened exposure to extreme heat due to the concentration of heat-absorbing infrastructure and limited green spaces. He cautioned that prolonged exposure to excessive heat could lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Vulnerable groups identified include outdoor workers, street traders, and those with underlying health conditions. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear breathable clothing, seek shade, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat periods.
The commissioner also noted that extreme heat could worsen air quality, particularly during the dry season.
