El-Rufai: Nigeria's Economic Issues Stem from Talent Misallocation

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, stated that Nigeria's economic underperformance is not due to a shortage of talent but rather the misallocation of the country's brightest minds. He explained that talented Nigerians often gravitate towards activities that provide the highest immediate financial returns, particularly in a system that rewards rent-seeking behavior over productive enterprise.

This trend ultimately weakens long-term economic growth. El-Rufai cited economic data indicating that Nigeria's GDP growth is projected at 4.1 percent for 2024, with a GDP per capita of approximately $1,084, placing the country among lower-income economies.

He noted that 93 percent of the labor force is employed in the informal sector, and the tax-to-GDP ratio is only 8.2 percent. El-Rufai warned that when skilled individuals abandon productive sectors for rent-driven activities, economic progress slows.

He proposed several reforms aimed at redirecting talent towards productive sectors, including reducing discretionary government power, making regulations predictable, strengthening property rights, and creating conditions for businesses to scale.
